What is power? Based on several definitions, power can be described as:
Jesus told His disciples that they would receive power after the Holy Spirit came upon them, as recorded in Acts 1:8.
Jesus also prepared His disciples for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in John 20:21–22. When He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit,” He demonstrated that receiving the Holy Spirit is a choice. The Holy Spirit does not force Himself on anyone—you must be willing to receive Him.
In Acts 1:4–5, Jesus instructed His disciples not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for “the promise of the Father.” This promise was the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. They were told where to go and what to do—wait in expectation.
When the Holy Spirit Comes—There Is Power
When the Holy Spirit dwells within a person, that person receives power:
The Ability to Do Something
Those in the upper room were given the ability to speak in languages they had never studied. They declared the goodness of God and were able to witness to people from many nations.
The Ability to Act in a Particular Way
They responded with joy, excitement, and bold expression. Their behavior was so different that some observers assumed they were intoxicated. In reality, they were filled with the Spirit, expressing spiritual joy and freedom.
The Ability to Influence Others
People from different countries gathered in Jerusalem were deeply impacted by what they saw and heard. When Peter stood and preached Jesus Christ, about 3,000 people were added to the fellowship.
The power of the Holy Spirit working through 120 believers influenced thousands. That same power compels believers today to go beyond the walls of the church and into the community, sharing the good news.
The Force Exerted by God
In Acts 2:1–3, a mighty manifestation occurred:
“There came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind… and it filled all the house… and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire.”
This was a powerful, tangible move of God. The sound, the wind, and the visible manifestation demonstrated the force of God’s presence entering the room.
The Result of Power
The power of the Holy Spirit was:
The world is drawn to Christ when they see the power of God actively working in His people. When we allow the Holy Spirit to lead and direct us, others will witness God’s presence through our lives.
